"A book is a friend; a good book is a good friend. It will talk to you when you want it to talk, and it will keep still when you want it to keep still; and there are not many friends who know enough to do that."

Oregon Reads 2009

Stubborn Twig by Lauren Kessler

On February 14, 2009 Oregon will commemorate its sesquicentennial!

You've all heard of community read programs where everyone in the community reads the same book and there are book discussions, programs and events relating to the book?  That's the plan for Oregon Reads 2009

The centerpiece book for Oregon Reads 2009 will be Stubborn Twig by Lauren Kessler, a non-fiction account of the Yasui family of Hood River.  The story covers the grandfather's immigration to America in the 1900's, internment during WWII and the activities of the grandchildren today.  It is already available in the Coastal Resource Sharing Network library catalog (www.beachbooks.org).

In addition, Bat 6 by Virginia Euwer Wolff and Apples to Oregon by Deborah Hopkinson will be featured as youth titles.
