Welcome to the Tillamook County Library! I hope you have visited the new Main Library since we opened September 30, 2006. The new building was possible with a $3.7 million dollar bond levy, which was passed in 2003. The Tillamook County Library Foundation raised $1 million dollars to help with construction costs and to purchase the furniture for the building. Over 700 donors contributed by purchasing bricks, bookshelves, tables, chairs, benches, and bookstacks. All of these items have engraved plates with the donor or honoree's name. Bricks and bookshelves are still available and they make wonderful gifts.
One incredible gift of art was donated by Vern Buell in honor of his wife Louise. The Children's mural is on the wall that enters the Children's room, and is one of the main attractions of the building. The mural was design and painted by Julie Henson and her work delights children every time they enter the room.
A second mural is on the wall at the stairs going to the second floor. The Library Foundation saw this design by Helen Hill and everyone loved the art. This gave the WOW to the building!
June 14 the Library's Summer Reading Program began in all branches. The theme this year is "Get a Clue". Children can read 10 hours in the summer and they will receive a prize. Several programs are scheduled for kids this summer, please check the branch you use for times.
The County wide Friends of the Library will be having a Book & Bake Sale June 30.
This organization has been active for 50 years and is interested in having more members.
The Library Corner Bookstore has been very successful. The store is managed by the Tillamook County Library Foundation. Most items are $1.00 and the money is for future needs of the new Library. Volunteers are still needed so the Bookstore can add additional hours. Stop by and say hello and enjoy the browsing.
Seeing the public enjoying the new Library, these words come to my mind: Engagement, Excitement, Enthusiasm, Curiosity and Passion. I hope you have the identical thoughts when you enter the Library. The new Main Library was part of a 20 year building plan with the Manzanita Branch Library (built by the North Tillamook County Library Friends) leading the way with a new building in 1987. The South Tillamook County Library in Pacific City opened in 1995 (built by the South Tillamook Library Club). In 1999 the Rockaway Beach Branch Library opened (built by the Rockaway Beach Friends of the Library).
As you use the Tillamook County Libraries, I hope you will discover that the libraries are easy to use and convenient. I also hope you will make a dynamic connection to the Library.
